One rain jacket and a list that actually fits in a cabin bag.
Japan rewards a small bag. Pack layers, not outfits. A compact rain jacket, walking shoes you already trust, and shirts that dry overnight will cover most weeks outside ski season.
Convenience stores solve forgotten toothpaste. They do not solve blistered feet. Bring the socks you like. A light scarf helps on trains and in temples. Leave the third pair of jeans at home.
If you move cities, laundry is easy. If you stay in one ryokan, you still do not need seven of everything. Pack for the weather on the forecast, then add one warm layer for evenings.
